Enhancing Performance Through

Understanding Yourself and Others
Class Notes from July 13, 2004 TeleConference

If you do not have your own report to review, you can view a sample profile.

The Team View enables you to get a quick view of each participant's DiSC classical pattern. A sample Team View is available. If your workgroup were taking this profile, each participant's Classical Pattern could be included in a Team View report which could be shared with the group.

The full report, with all the supplements, has a retail value of $97.50 because we have included all the supplemental reports with it. Normally people would not order all of the supplemental reports, but we included all of them so you could see what is available and sample them. The full report is divided into these sections:

  • General Characteristics (contains your DiSC classical pattern)
  • Strategies for Creating a Positive Relationship
  • Relating to People and the Environment
  • Approach to Managing Others
  • Strategies for Managing
  • Approach to Selling
  • Strategies for Sales Management

The DiSC Profile is an excellent tool to assist you in most effectively managing yourself and others. All people have all 4 behavioral tendencies, but in differing intensities. The relationship of the four tendencies to each other creates a profile pattern which provides information about a person’s potential behavioral responses.

  • Self-Management: People who understand their strengths and weaknesses are able to adapt to the needs of others and the needs of their environment in ways that lead to maximum effectiveness, and people who self-manage are capable of becoming peak performers. The DiSC Profile helps us to recognize, understand, and even value differences in ourselves and others. People fall into four different types of behavior -- (D) dominance, (i) influence, (S) steadiness, (C) conscientiousness --and each type has a different way of looking at the world, and a different set of needs, wants, goals and fears. The attached notes provide additional information about each dimension of behavior, including suggestions for how to relate to others in each dimension.
  • Managing Others: Differences cause conflict, unless we have a system for understanding them, and strategies for managing our differences. Those who are responsible for managing others must work with and through others to achieve results. We are most effective in managing others when we do what they need us to do, and how they need us to do it.
D – Dominance
-decisive
-control
-wants results
-“bulldozer”
I – Influence
-enthusiastic
-interaction
-social recognition
-“social butterfly”
S – Steadiness
-cooperation
-dependable
-wants stability
-“peace-keeper”
C – Conscientiousness
-analytical
-quality
-accuracy
-“perfectionist”

Some DiSC Humor...

How food fares with the DiSC® Dimensions of Behavior…

High D

Sometimes eats over the sink
Likes to try new, exotic foods
Loves to microwave everything, even water
Never follows recipes, has to add and substitute
Eats out a great deal

High i

 Entertains a great deal
 Likes gourmet foods
Has latest kitchen gadgets, but doesn’t use them
 Attracted to fancy packaging
Wants to know what all their friends are cooking for dinner

High S

Values meals and considers them important family time
Considers the kitchen the most important room in the house
Eats from the four basic food groups each day
Likes to exchange recipes
Cooks whatever anyone wants to eat, even if that means eating things they
don’t like

High C
Reads all labels
Knows all the percentages of protein, fat, and carbohydrates in foods
Shops for good prices and utilizes coupons
Buys kitchen gadgets if they are economical and well constructed
Never leaves the house with a fat and calorie guidebook in case they eat out

More DiSC Humor…

Getting on a busy elevator…
  • The D walks up, gets on the elevator, and pushes the button that closes the door.
  • The i lets others in, says “Always room for one more,” and “Come in, you’re going to be late; we’ll wait for you!”
  • The S will wait in line, moving from one line to another, appearing unable to make a decision.
  • The C will get on the elevator. If it’s crowded, the C will count the number of people and, if the number is over the limit, will make someone get off.
On the golf course…
  • Watch out for the D on the golf course. They frequently drive through groups of golfers.
  • The i spends more time in the clubhouse talking than on the course.
  • The S plays golf the same day, the same time, the same place, using the same clubs.
  • The C keeps score and plays strictly by the rules. They clean their clubs a lot too.
